Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Courses
 
Course Background
Starting from Oct 2006, the Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine will co-joint with the American Heart Association ITO – Hong Kong & Macao to Launch the AHA PALS provider courses in Hong Kong.
 

It is a two days course and the goal of the PALS is to teach health care professionals to recognize infants and children at risk of cardiopulmonary arrest, to provide strategies on prevention of cardiopulmonary arrest in infants and children, and to perform the cognitive and psychomotor skills for resuscitating and stabilizing infants and children in shock, respiratory failure and cardiopulmonary arrest.

 

Skill in bag mask ventilation, management of airway, defibrillation and cardioversion, use of AED in children older than one year old and rhythm management are emphasized.

 

The Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine has been providing resuscitation training since 1991. All accredited AHA instructors are practicing medical or nursing colleagues with years of teaching experience.

 
 
Course Test
To complete the PALS Course, candidate should be able to demonstrate CPR skills and use of the AED and to achieve the learning objectives for each module.
 
A post-course MCQ examination will be issued. The passing rate is 84%.
 
AHA PALS completion card will be issued to each successful candidate.
 
 
Reading Material
The course material including AHA PALS Provider Manual and AHA 2008 ECC Handbook will be ready for collection after successful application. Early application and collection of course materials is much encouraged.

Intended Candidate
Personnel who are working in emergency, intensive care, critical care or acute departments/wards; emergency medical providers such as medical officers, nurses, emergency technicians, paramedics and other professionals who need to respond to a cardiovascular emergency in infants and children.
 
 
Course Pre-requisites
Candidates must possess current AHA BLS certification or equivalent. Please send photocopy of valid AHA BLS provider certificate or equivalent together with PALS Application form. Candidates without current certification are encouraged to join BLS Provider Course. (www.hkcem.com)
